INTRODUCTION

MOVING FORWARDS TO BLAZE NEW TRAILS

Kinoforum arrives at its 37th edition reaffirming its belief in the power of the short film as a space for creation, connection, experimentation, and dialogue.

This edition marks a new chapter for Kinoforum. Through our restructuring, we are beginning a new cycle; keeping alive the legacy built over nearly four decades while renewing our commitment to the future of audiovisual media.

This year, the programming draws inspiration
from looking at birds: observing their flight, the dynamics of their wings, and the beauty of the landscapes along their routes; chasing after them — and running alongside them — in circles and curves, and within the shapes formed between the birds and ourselves.

We remain driven by the same conviction that has always guided this festival: a belief in the short film as a place where new stories, new perspectives, and new possibilities for cinema emerge.

None of this would be possible without the filmmakers, crews, partners, sponsors, and, above all, the audience, who make Kinoforum a vibrant space for exchange and discovery.

A warm welcome to you all. May this edition inspire us to celebrate cinema, strengthen connections, and continue building the next chapters of this story together.

To Amplify the Power of Audiovisual Media

The audiovisual sector grows stronger by creating spaces to showcase talent and connect diverse worldviews. Spcine, the Municipal Department of Culture, and the São Paulo City Hall celebrate their partnership with the São Paulo International Short Film Festival – Kinoforum, united in their goal to amplify the power of audiovisual media.

Over three decades, the Festival has established the city as a hub for world cinema and a center for innovation. This history aligns with Spcine’s mission to strengthen the entire sector. This edition renews the partnership through training programs, screenings across the Spcine Circuit, and a dedicated collection on Spcine Play, while also marking the debut of the Acquisition Award.

Celebrating Kinoforum also means honoring the legacy of Zita Carvalhosa, who continues to inspire filmmakers and remind us that audiovisual media is an artistic expression, a cultural asset, and a tool for transformation!

The Power of Audiovisual Synthesis

Some artistic works turn brevity into an asset. This is the case with the short film, which combines visual and narrative precision, focusing its power on the conciseness of ideas. While this formal choice may present challenges and risks for creators, it also opens opportunities for experimentation that can foster new artistic approaches.

In this context, Kinoforum – the São Paulo International Short Film Festival – holds a prominent position in the contemporary audiovisual landscape. Often sidelined from commercial circuits and mainstream distribution channels, short films find vital spaces for screening and exchange at festivals like this one, fostering interaction among filmmakers, audiences, and industry professionals.

A partner of the Festival since its early editions, Sesc recognizes the event’s consistent track record in promoting short-film cinema and disseminating new works. Thus, for this 37th edition, the institution reaffirms its commitment to championing productions that broaden horizons and contribute to strengthening the audiovisual sector as a realm of artistic expression.

Diversity and Power in Short Films

The 37th edition of Kinoforum – São Paulo International Short Film Festival brings together a program that reflects the diversity and power of short films, fostering encounters between varied narratives and audiences.

This year, a selection of the festival's short films is featured on Itaú Cultural Play—Itaú Cultural’s free streaming platform—thereby expanding access to Brazilian audiovisual productions beyond movie theaters.

By broadening the reach of Brazilian films, showcasing works whose journeys are often confined to the festival circuit, and connecting new audiences with national cinema, IC Play reinforces Itaú Cultural’s commitment to democratizing access to audiovisual content and cultivating audiences.
